It's official: Castlevania: Belmont's Curse was announced in February during a PlayStation State of Play. Developed by Evil Empire, the studio behind Dead Cells, the game marks the series' return to its 2D platformer roots and arrives on PS5 on October 15.
According to the PlayStation Blog, the game is set in medieval Paris and follows Rose Belmont as she battles creatures of the night and unravels mysteries following Dracula's death. Multiple outlets got hands-on time with the game at a preview event in Paris, held inside a historic Neo-Gothic chapel.
Previews indicate that Belmont's Curse is a Metroidvania rooted in Symphony of the Night's design philosophy. IGN called it "a return worth waiting for," while GamesRadar stated that after three hours it already felt like "a classic." PC Gamer highlighted the whip weapon system and noted the game has no explicit continuity with the Netflix anime series, though its visual style was inspired by the show.
According to series producer Tsutomu Taniguchi, the team wanted to "make sure that everyone felt welcome, especially the anime fans who've never played the games." Belmont's Curse is the first mainline Castlevania release since Lords of Shadow 2 in 2014, ending a 12-year drought for 2D entries in the franchise.
