Bungie confirmed that Marathon's next major update, originally scheduled for September 22, will now launch on December 8. According to IGN, the update will include permanent PvE content, a social space with a firing range, an experimental TDM mode, and additional features.
As reported by PC Gamer, the studio announced it is "moving away from a strict seasonal schedule to give the team more flexibility to build, test, and improve features before release." A smaller update will arrive on October 6, resetting progression and the in-game economy to prepare for the overhaul.
According to GamesRadar, Bungie acknowledged that "Marathon needs more depth, more variety, stronger progression, and better reasons to keep playing over the long term." The strategic shift reflects challenges the live service has faced since launch.
The October update, called Nightfall Refresh, will provide all players with a fresh starting point, something the studio deemed necessary after issues that accelerated some players into endgame while leaving others behind.
