A rare copy of Super Mario Bros. sold for a record-breaking $3 million at auction, making it the most expensive video game ever auctioned. The sale was announced by Heritage Auctions on Friday.

The copy is a sealed cartridge from the game's second production run, graded PSA 96, a near-perfect score in terms of condition. The "holy grail" status attributed by collectors reflects its extreme scarcity.
