During an exclusive hands-on preview at Capcom's Osaka headquarters, the developer confirmed that Onimusha: Way of the Sword does not follow a purely linear progression path. According to PC Gamer, portions of the game offer more open-ended areas set in Kyoto, allowing free exploration away from the main narrative flow.
Players will be able to venture off the critical path to undertake side missions while exploring the region. The approach combines directed moments with exploratory spaces, offering more flexibility in progression compared to the free demo released earlier.
The game also showcases elaborate audio and design work. As revealed by Shunichi Suwa, the audio director, Capcom's team used real swords and authentic scabbards to craft weapon sound effects, aiming for a "very raw and rough feel" in combat audio.
Capcom also detailed the antagonist Sasaki Ganryu's design, based on the historical swordmaster. According to art director Hiroyuki Nara, the character was developed with distinct qualities, including a fighting style described as "very alluring" in the way it moves, adding depth to the game's central rivalry.
Onimusha: Way of the Sword launches in March 2026 on PC, PlayStation, and Xbox. Pre-orders are now available with discounts on platforms including Mercado Livre.
