Rockstar Games released new modding guidelines for GTA 6, establishing restrictions that mark a shift from the franchise's more permissive policies in the past. According to Rock Paper Shotgun, the studio explicitly banned the creation of unofficial story expansions, unauthorized ports to other platforms, and mods combining maps from other titles in the series.
The new rules open with the directive "Respect our games," as reported by GamesRadar. Rockstar justified the restrictions by saying they aim to "maintain a fun, creative, and welcoming place for players and content creators." The decision stands out given that Rockstar acquired FiveM, the largest roleplay framework for GTA 5, years ago, and the project reached 200,000 concurrent players on Steam in March 2024.
The stricter guidelines anticipate the post-launch period of GTA 6, when the arrival of the PC version is expected to bring a significant surge in modifications. TheGamer highlighted that the measure marks a contrast between the creative potential expected from fans and the control Rockstar intends to exercise over the community mod landscape for the new title.
