Call of Duty: Black Ops 1 and 2 surprise-launch on PS4 and PS5

It's official: Call of Duty: Black Ops (2010) and Black Ops 2 (2012) are available on PS4 and PS5 as of Thursday, July 9. The release was a shadow drop, with no date announced: both games simply appeared on the PS Store. It is the first time the Treyarch classics run natively on Sony's current consoles, since the PS5 has no PS3 backward compatibility.

The new versions are ports handled by Iron Galaxy alongside Treyarch, not remasters: the visuals stay essentially the same as the originals. Each title includes the full base package, with the campaign, multiplayer and the Zombies mode, now running on PlayStation Network's modern online infrastructure and with trophy support. IGN had already noted, based on the trophy lists, that modes such as Theater Mode, League Play and Wager Matches were left out.

Each game costs $39.99. According to Push Square, PlayStation Plus subscribers can grab each one for $19.99, a 50% discount running until August 6. As Kotaku noted, the original games' map packs (DLC) are not included and are sold separately.

Treyarch had confirmed the ports in June with a July window but no set date. On Xbox and PC both titles have been playable for years; in the PlayStation ecosystem, revisiting Black Ops 1 and 2 required a PS3. The release puts two of the franchise's most celebrated multiplayer games within reach of the current console base.
