Subnautica 2 has received the Buddy System update (version 1.2), focusing on improvements to cooperative play. According to creative director Anthony Gallegos in a released dev diary, the headline feature is proximity voice chat: players can talk to each other while nearby, and as they move apart, voices shift to a radio-like sound, progressively degrading until nearly inaudible.
Beyond proximity chat, the update introduces a revive system allowing teammates to resurrect each other, underwater emotes for player interaction, and improvements to item trading. These additions aim to make the co-op experience more immersive and dynamic.
Developers at Unknown Worlds confirmed that larger updates remain on the roadmap, including a new region and story content targeted primarily at solo players. Subnautica 2 continues in early access on PC and Xbox.
