Dragon Age unlikely to return, series producer says; EA creates obstacles for new projects

The Dragon Age franchise is unlikely to see a new game anytime soon. According to Mark Darrah, executive producer of the series from Origins through Inquisition, the future of Dragon Age is practically sealed by EA's business model.

In an interview with FRVR, Darrah described Electronic Arts as "a hedge fund with a videogame hobby." He explains that making any game through EA is complicated because of the company's "complicated relationship to shipping games at all." When someone tries to pitch an existing intellectual property for continuation, they often get "ripped apart" in the approval process.

"I don't know who at BioWare would pitch a Dragon Age," Darrah stated. The remark reflects the critical situation at the studio following the underperformance of Dragon Age: The Veilguard in 2024 and the significant staff cuts that followed, leaving fewer than 100 people at BioWare.

The scenario is even more challenging because of what Darrah calls EA's "frightening graveyard" of dormant intellectual properties. The accumulation of shelved franchises reinforces internal reluctance to pitch sequels or new titles within the company. With Veilguard having missed sales targets, the chances of anyone at BioWare daring to propose Dragon Age's return appear virtually nonexistent.
