Officially confirmed at BlizzCon 2026's opening ceremony, the new StarCraft marks the franchise's return after nearly a decade away. According to multiple outlets covering the event, this is not a sequel to StarCraft II (2010), but rather an open-world shooter with a narrative focus, representing a dramatic genre shift for the series.
The game is set roughly 70 years after the events of StarCraft II. The announcement cinematic, shown during the ceremony, depicts human soldiers from the Dominion landing on an alien world, establishing the first-person perspective of this new format. The project is led by Dan Hay, former executive producer of the Far Cry series.
According to Xbox Wire, Blizzard confirmed that the new StarCraft will release on console alongside PC, broadening the platform lineup for the title. The target release window is 2030, still several years away.
BlizzCon 2026, held for the first time after a two-year hiatus, also featured other major announcements from Blizzard, including Diablo V slated for 2029 and new information on World of Warcraft.
