Playground Games detailed Fable during Gamescom, reaffirming the new title's approach to bring the series back after 16 years without a mainline entry (since Fable 3). According to Will Kennedy, associate game director, the combat was designed to preserve the "approachability" characteristic of the classics while adapting to current expectations.
"When we talk about being faithful to the classic franchise, we thought about how there was an approachability to combat there," Kennedy explained. "And we knew that we wanted to be able to capture some of that for our game as well. But at the same time, we're making a game for gaming today."
The balance is delicate. The series has long-time fans waiting for a new chapter that feels familiar, yet Playground Games must incorporate modern mechanics without losing the experience's identity. The studio showcased 18 minutes of gameplay at the convention, allowing visitors to experience the direction firsthand.
Fable launches in 2027 on Xbox Series X|S and PC.
