Final Fantasy VII Revelation's announcement at Summer Game Fest 2026 revealed significant changes from the previous two games in the remake trilogy. Director Naoki Hamaguchi detailed how Weapon bosses—the franchise's notorious superbosses—now fall into two categories: mandatory story encounters and optional battles scattered across the map.
The removal of the level cap marks a departure from Final Fantasy VII Remake and Rebirth's progression systems, giving players greater freedom in character development. Hamaguchi emphasized that optional Weapon encounters will carry their own narrative components, mirroring the structure of the 1997 original game.
Revelation will also feature the trilogy's largest post-game content offering, significantly extending gameplay after the main story concludes. This expansion addresses community concerns about structural rigidity in earlier entries, attempting to balance exploration freedom with a cohesive narrative closure for the series.
The changes demonstrate how Square Enix is responding to player feedback while finalizing the reimagined trilogy.
