It's official: Marathon will receive its first major PvE mode on July 21st. Called Vault Breaker, the new experience lets players venture into the Cryo Archive map solo, in pairs or trios to tackle a series of increasingly challenging vaults, according to information shared by Bungie.
The mode features a unique progression system that allows players to grow more powerful across multiple runs until they reach the final vault. There's a catch, though: any gear or items you find stay behind when you leave the map. The exception is Vault Data, a new currency that can be extracted and traded elsewhere.
Vault Breaker is marked as experimental and requires a special Sponsored Kit to queue. The addition represents a significant shift for Marathon, which has been focused on player-versus-player combat. Bungie also confirmed that Season 3 of the game will begin in September 2026.
