Sony has confirmed it is stepping away from publishing Physint, the new action-espionage game in development at Kojima Productions. Microsoft announced that Xbox will take over as publisher of the project.
In an official statement, Sony said it "made the difficult decision to step away from collaborating with Kojima Productions on its project Physint," adding that it "continues to have great admiration for Hideo Kojima's vision for the game." Xbox subsequently announced Physint will now be published under its banner, expanding the Kojima Productions partnership beyond OD, the horror game also in development with the platform.
According to Kojima, the shift became necessary after Sony informed him in June that it intended to cancel the project. In his statement, Kojima said he "unexpectedly received notice from PlayStation Studios that they would cancel the Physint project" and spent "the last three months searching tirelessly for a new partner" until finding Xbox, with whom they "share a common vision for the future."
Physint was announced in January 2024 as a PlayStation exclusive and is described as Kojima's return to tactical action-espionage gameplay in the vein of Metal Gear Solid. The Xbox partnership will also expand into film and television projects, the company said.
OD, Kojima's other project with Xbox, continues development under the same publishing arrangement.
